Hawking Class
Welcome to Hawking Class
Welcome to Hawking class! My name is Miss Ellwood and I teach in Year 5. We are also lucky enough to have a coach from Get Active to teach PE on a Thursday afternoon.
In Hawking we aim to create an atmosphere of mutual respect for each other and a resilience in our learning. We will also develop our ability to work independently as well as collaboratively. Although we work very hard, we have lots of fun along the way!
Term 2’s learning
During this half term, we’ll read information texts to find out about the Solar System and the Sun, using mnemonics to help us remember the facts. We’ll make a Solar System and investigate the cycle of day into night. We’ll learn about Galileo, the ‘father’ of modern astronomy and his famous astronomical discoveries. Taking on the roles of the planets, we’ll use movement to demonstrate the motions of the planets and moons. We’ll investigate space adventures and write newspaper reports. Then we’ll make a space shuttle or satellite, testing the materials for durability. At the end of the project, we’ll produce cushions on a space theme and consider the big question: why is there life on Earth?
Of course this only gives you a flavour of what the children will be getting up to in school this term and I am sure they will share many more of their learning experiences with you.
We look forward to a busy and productive term.
The Year 5 Team.
This week is another busy one for Year 5. On Wednesday some of us will be competing in the district cross country. On Thursday it is the final round of the football league on the Redwell all weather pitch.
On Friday we will be launched into an exciting space adventure at the National Space Centre. We leave at 8.45- please make sure your child is here on time with a packed lunch and in full school uniform- Pictures to follow.
